Pinotage

Pinotage is a red wine grape that was developed in South Africa, and is one of their signature varieties.

The grape was created in 1925 when it was propagated with the Pinot Noir grape and the Cinsault grape.

Pinotage is used as a single variety wine but is also blended to create fortified wine and red sparkling wine.

Because the grape is easy to grow it was often used to produce cheap, low-quality wine. But, in the 1960’s the wine experienced an explosion of popularity when a Bellevue wine consisting of Pinotage grapes would win the South African Cape Wine Show in 1959.

Pinotage most commonly produces wine with smoky flavours, with notes of banana and tropical fruit.

Besides South Africa, Pinotage is also produced in Brazil, Canada, and New Zealand. More recently, German winemakers have started to experiment with the Pinotage grape.
